A local authority in London is to refund £1.1 million worth of fines collected through incorrect parking tickets, it has emerged.

According to the London Evening Standard, Richmond upon Thames Council is to pay back to motorists wrongfully issued penalties in the borough after admitting it had not used the right camera on its mobile CCTV vans.

This comes as a result of a campaign managed by resident Nigel Wise, who was handed a £100 fine but managed to get it overturned at an appeal on the basis that the wrong equipment had been used to give this penalty.

Consequently, a further 20,000 tickets were also shown to be invalid, meaning the body must now refund affected road users.

Mr Wise told the news source this represents a "victory for common sense".

This comes after the Manchester Evening News reported recently that a coach driver was issued with a £35 fine for exceeding parking time regulations by less than a minute outside a swimming baths in Ashton.
