Loud noise at work 'contributing to hearing loss in UK'

The fact that some workers are exposed to loud noises at work is contributing to hearing loss in the UK, it has been suggested.

Commenting on the issue, Emma Harrison, director of public engagement at membership charity RNID, noted that exposure to such conditions can speed up the loss of hearing.

She said: "People often take up to 15 years to deal with their hearing loss but it's important to take action early to get fitted with a hearing aid and avoid experiencing unnecessary isolation."

The expert also stated that while age-related deafness affects 55 per cent of the over 60s, industrial hearing problems are also a problem for many individuals.

Ms Harrison went on to point out that digital hearing aids are available on the NHS and they can help sufferers by amplifying sounds that would otherwise be difficult to hear.

There are some sectors in which industrial deafness has been particularly prevalent, including coal mining, metal manufacturing and ship building.

Those who think their hearing is impaired because of their work may be able to make a claim for compensation.
