Man requires finger amputation after accident at work
Posted by Mark Cunningham
An accident at work has caused a young employee to lose parts of two of his fingers on his first day as a member of staff.
The unnamed man, who is 19 years old, sustained his injury when his hand got caught in a power press some three hours into his first day as an employee at JKL Industrial Services, a metal forming organisation based in the Staffordshire city of Stoke.
As a result of this ordeal, the man had to have surgery to remove the middle and ring fingers of his left hand at the first joint after it became trapped in an unguarded part of the equipment.
During an investigation conducted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), it was established that JKL had not provided adequate guarding for the press as well as not giving the man sufficient information about how to operate it safely.
Official HSE data published recently showed that there were 495 serious workplace injuries in Staffordshire over the course of 2009-10.
