One of the duties of managers is to make sure they look out for signs of stress among their workers.

This is according to Stephen Bevan, managing director of the Work Foundation, who said that such people should spot the early signs of anxiety or poor coping among employees so that they can provide assistance.

He also noted that individuals who work in roles they enjoy, where they have control over the order and pace of their tasks and are given support tend to be less at risk from stress.

Mr Bevan added: "If they feel stressed it is important that they do not bottle it up and find somebody - inside or outside work - who they can talk to about how they feel and what is at the root of their problem."

His comments followed the release of research by the Work Foundation, which found that people who suffer from worries while performing their tasks are more prone to coronary heart disease and hypertension.
