Managers must make sure they fully embrace social media as a vital 21st century professional tool sooner rather than later.

That is the opinion of Tim Gibbon, director at communications consultancy Elemental, who has said that engaging with websites such as Twitter and Facebook is an essential step to take in the current business landscape.

Mr Gibbon explained these portals represent the future in terms of marketing as they enable companies to have "direct communication and interaction with their audiences within their own environments".

With this in mind, Mr Gibbon suggested bosses should allow their staff to actively use their accounts on social media sites for professional purposes as they help to break down barriers involved in working.

Last week (June 23rd), Fresh Business Thinking revealed that 53 per cent of professionals witnessed a direct boost to their business as a result of using the likes of Twitter and LinkedIn.
