Many potential motor speeding convictions in Lancashire 'withdrawn'

Ylr-news-19212389

A considerable number of potential court prosecutions for speeding have been withdrawn in Lancashire, new figures show.

Statistics from the government and Lancashire police cited in Lancashire Evening Post suggest that of the 85,994 potential prosecutions identified in four years, only 24,021 ended up in court.

Potential prosecutions relate to cases involving unpaid speeding tickets and unattended speed awareness courses.

They also involve cases in which a hearing is elected or the matter can only be dealt with at a court due to the speed involved.

Responding to the figures, Nigel Humphries of the Association of British Drivers (ABD), said: "It shows they can't cope with the numbers involved so they are giving up in a lot of cases.

"That says to us there are far too many people being prosecuted and if that many people are driving over the speed limit maybe they should be looking at the speed limits."

A non-profit organisation, the ABD was founded in 1992 and campaigns on behalf of UK motorists.
