A lesbian couple have been denied a marriage licence after applying at Petersfield Register Office as part of an Equal Love campaign to challenge the ban on straight civil partnerships and gay marriages.

Katie Green and Colette French, both 21, are among eight couples currently taking their case to the courts, arguing that the laws in the UK are discriminatory against homosexual people.

Such couples have been able to hold civil partnership ceremonies since December 2005, but are still prohibited from getting married.

"Colette and I would personally like a civil marriage, although it would secure our relationship it is the ultimate recognition of a person's love and commitment," Ms Green was quoted by the BBC as saying, adding they both feel they are entitled to this.

This comes after the Liberal Democrats called for changes in the law to allow marriages for same-sex couples, with the Autumn Conference urging the government to allow such unions between gay people.ADNFCR-2353-ID-800268824-ADNFCR
