Maternity pay in UK 'insufficient'

The maternity pay women in the UK are eligible for should be increased, it has been claimed.

According to Alison Garnham, chief executive of Daycare Trust, the country "stands out" in Europe as having one of the longest and lowest paid maternity leave entitlements.

Her comments were made in the wake of a decision by the European Parliament to pass draft legislation to extend fully paid maternity leave across Europe from 14 to 20 weeks.

This would apply to domestic workers and self-employed people across the continent, in addition to those performing roles for employers.

Ms Garnham stated: "There is evidence to suggest that where countries implement child and family-friendly policies, the benefits to society and family/work balance outweigh the initial costs."

She went on to state that the Daycare Trust believes all payments made to women taking time off after giving birth should be at least the national minimum wage level.
