Mental health problems 'still resulting in discrimination among workers'

Workers in the UK who suffer from mental health problems are still the victims of unfair treatment, an expert has said.

In remarks made to Personnel Today, HR consultant Helen Waygood suggested that firms need to be more progressive in their outlooks.

She stated: "For many employers, it's still far easier to marginalise colleagues with mental illness than face up to how it can be managed."

Ms Waygood herself suffers from bipolar disorder, which causes episodes of feeling down and mania and used to be referred to as manic depression.

Diagnosed with the condition over two decades ago, she kept the fact hidden from employers for most of her career for fear it would have a detrimental impact on the way managers viewed her.

Until staff members can talk about their conditions without being stigmatised, many will continue to "suffer in silence", she added, claiming that HR personnel are often reluctant to admit there is a problem in this regard.
