Michael Owen successful in defamation claim
Footballer Michael Owen has been successful in his legal action over alleged defamation.
The England international's case centred on a Daily Express story which claimed he was on the verge of retiring from football because no big clubs wanted to sign him.
Written under the title "Unwanted Toon striker at a cross roads, Finished at 29?", the article was published last month.
The newspaper also ran a story under the heading "Owen ready for sad finale".
Recently, Express Newspapers - which also publishes the Sunday Express and the Daily Star - agreed to pay damages to Owen and cover his legal costs.
It also apologised and accepted that the claims were false.
Owen's legal representative said: "These incredulous allegations are entirely without foundation and were obviously extremely distressing, hurtful and damaging to the claimant."
He added that the footballer is "delighted" to have won the case and to have been given the chance to set the record straight.
