Minimum wage increase 'is welcome'

The increase in the National Minimum Wage (NMW) has been welcomed by one group.
Last week, the government announced that it had accepted the recommendations of the Low Pay Commission concerning new rates.
For adults, the NMW is rising from £5.80 to £5.93 as of October this year.
Meanwhile, for 18 to 20-year-olds the lowest hourly wage is going up from (£4.83 to £4.92 and those aged 16 and 17 will benefit from an increase from £3.57 to £3.63.
Also, the age of eligibility for the adult rate of the minimum wage will fall from 22 to 21.
Responding to the development, the Trades Union Congress (TUC) said it is positive and is something the employers can cope with.
Brendan Barber, general secretary of the organisation - which describes itself as the voice of Britain at work - stated: "The TUC welcomes the rise in the adult minimum wage rate from ... October 2010. This is a relatively modest increase which the evidence shows employers can afford."
