There has been an increase in the number of fathers who stop working in order to take on childcare duties, it has been claimed.

New figures from Aviva suggest that the quantity of men opting to be stay-at-home dads has risen tenfold over the last decade.

The firm suggested that around 600,000 males with dependent children now look after their youngsters while wives or girlfriends go out to work.

This is up from the 60,000 recorded ten years ago, Aviva noted.

Commenting on the issue, Louise Colley, head of protection marketing at the company, said: "This shows how the lines of 'traditional' roles and responsibilities are becoming blurred."

It is no longer necessarily the case that men bring home money while women perform domestic duties, she added.

Recently, Katja Hall, director of employment policy at the Confederation of British Industry, advised the government to avoid making new paternity employment laws too complicated.
