Motoring fine statistics "alarming", MP says
The number of fines dispensed for motoring offences in Devon and Cornwall has been described as "alarming".
According to Home Office figures cited in Plymouth newspaper the Herald, a total of 119,000 such tickets were dispensed in the area during 2007.
Of these, 62,549 tickets were handed out for speeding offences, while a further 31,596 tickets were handed out for illegal parking.
Responding to the figures, Geoffrey Cox, MP for Torridge and West Devon, said they were "extraordinary".
He added: "It is alarming to hear that we are the second highest in the country."
Mr Cox went on to say that the public will be "understandably suspicious" of the level of fines and will want reassurance that the tickets are not being handed out for revenue-raising purposes.
Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, anyone has the right to request information held by public bodies, such as the Home Office.
