Motorists caught speeding given chance to avoid tickets

Road users who are caught exceeding the speed limit in the West Midlands will be able to avoid getting a ticket under the terms of a new initiative.

Due to launch later this summer, the scheme is being run by West Midlands Police - an organisation that serves a local population of nearly 2.6 million.

Rather than receiving points, drivers will be able to opt to take a short classroom education course designed to re-educate them concerning the dangers of travelling too fast.

It is hoped the move will result in a reduction in the number of road accidents.

Commenting on the idea, Inspector Mick Hartill said: "We do appreciate that some drivers may suffer a lapse of attention rather than deliberately breaking the law."

This is why the sessions are going to be set up, he went on to note.

He also pointed out that excessive speed is a factor in many road collisions.
