Motorists 'confused by vehicle maintenance charges'
Many motorists are confused over the charges imposed by garages for vehicle repairs, new research has found.
According to Motor Codes, one in five drivers has been charged more for work to their car than they were initially quoted by the garage responsible.
In addition, 13 per cent were unsure about what work was done to their vehicle, while seven per cent were baffled by the technical jargon used.
Commenting on the issue, Chris Mason, director of Motor Codes, said: "There are no defined set of rules that covers anything from a franchise dealership to a sole trader operation so customers are confused and their expectations vary."
He added that transactions between mechanics and road users should be conducted on a "no surprise" basis and consumers should be told exactly what the repairs will cost.
Meanwhile, research conducted recently by the AA found that women could be leaving themselves vulnerable to large car repair bills, with a quarter of those polled revealing they never check their vehicles' coolant.
