Motorists need to make sure they have effective insurance in place ahead of the winter months, an expert in the industry has said.

Martin Paling, head of Hastings Direct's commercial vehicle arm, has urged all road-users to take extra care when driving in the coming months as conditions can be treacherous.

He explained that as the days become shorter and darker, the "likelihood of ice, snow and wet conditions increase", meaning road traffic accidents become more common.

"This could be slipping off the road in icy conditions or a multiple vehicle collision," Mr Paling added.

Therefore, taking no risks while behind the wheel is advisable and checking the accident cover an individual has is sufficient is also vital.

Mr Paling indicated this is the case even more so for tradespeople, as having a crash could mean they would be unable to complete their daily work requirements.

Recently, an official from the Institute of Advanced Motorists insisted it is important for drivers to continue learning even after they have passed their test.
