MP challenges Freedom of Information denial
Posted by Emily Jones
An MP who sought information concerning a hospital under the Freedom of Information Act has said she will fight the refusal of the government to hand over the material.
Susan Kramer, the Liberal Democrat MP for Richmond Park, asked for all letters and emails from the end of August last year discussing the future of Kingston Hospital.
However, the Department for Health said the amount of correspondence was too high for this to be possible.
Responding to this, Ms Kramer said: "This answer just reveals the sheer volume of discussions that have been had about the future of our local NHS services and further strengthens our case to get everything into the public domain."
The government will not be allowed to continue with proposals without having to answer to the local community, she added.
Under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act 2000, which came into effect in 2005, everyone has the right to request material held by public sector bodies.
