The number of people wanting to both buy and sell properties in the UK increased in the early part of 2011, companies within the sector have indicated.

According to the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA), some 700 companies acting as the facilitator of deals involving residences across the country witnessed a "surge" in activity in the first two weeks of the new year.

More than half - 59 per cent - of the firms surveyed by the NAEA stated that the number of house hunters registering an interest in acquiring a home during this period was higher than they would have expected it to be at this time of year.

Mike Jones, president of the organisation, commented: "The results of this latest survey would seem to indicate a renewed confidence in the housing market as we begin 2011."

This comes after David Lawrenson, private rented sector expert at LettingFocus.com, said that demand for rental properties will stay strong in the coming 12 months.
