New consumer protection guidelines announced

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has published an independent evaluation of consumer codes and their impact on citizens.
The research focused on the group's Consumer Codes Approval Scheme (CCAS), which encourages trade associations and other industry bodies to ensure their members meet criteria regarding purchasers' rights.
Cavendish Elithorn, senior director of policy at OFT, stated: "This evaluation provides useful intelligence and insight into the working of our code scheme and the way codes develop through the different stages of the process."
Furthermore, the report will allow the organisation to improve its CCAS codes and provide sufficient protection to consumers.
Among the measures that industry bodies are encouraged to implement are the availability of fast and efficient complaints procedures, as well as clear pre-contractual information.
Recently, a report by the University of Birmingham for Age UK revealed that a high proportion of people are releasing equity in a bid to pay off debts.
