New crane rules 'may not reduce workplace injuries'

The number of workers who suffer injuries as a result of accidents involving tower cranes may not be reduced as a result of new rules.
Devised by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the regulations mean that there will be a register of conventional tower cranes and employers will have a duty to provide relevant information.
This will include the site location and the name and address of the crane owners.
According to Allianz Engineering, the changes being implemented by the HSE - which aims to reduce the risks that arise to people's wellbeing as a result of workplace activities - may not have an impact on safety.
It suggested that although they will mean the whereabouts of cranes will be tracked, errors made in the installation and examination of the devices will not be identified.
Allianz's Phil Wright remarked: "We are not convinced that these laws will make a substantial difference to safety figures in the sector."
