New gender pay reporting proposals outlined

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has outlined new proposals for the reporting of gender pay differences.

Under plans drawn up by the organisation, employers that opt to analyse and report publicly such discrepancies in remuneration will receive limited immunity from investigation.

The commission - which is a non-departmental public body and was established in October 2007 - has introduced the idea as a means of increasing pay equality between men and women.

EHRC chair Trevor Phillips said: "I'm pleased that the commission has been able to play such a unique role in coming up with some innovative and concrete solutions to begin tackling the issue of the gender pay gap."

He added that research suggests most firms in the UK realise they need to address unfair pay practices that remain in place 40 years after Equal Pay Act was introduced.

The partial immunity from investigation incentive should encourage some businesses to come forward with details of their remuneration strategies, he went on to suggest.
