Two patients - who have not been named - have been awarded millions of pounds in compensation from the University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust after sustaining brain damage during heart surgery operations at the Bristol Royal Infirmary.

A 19-year-old man - who was one when he was taken into theatre in 1992 to correct a heart defect - is to receive nearly £4 million, local paper the Evening Post reports.

Left with epilepsy, autistic traits and severe behavioural problems, he was awarded a lump sum of £1 million and annual payments over the course of his lifetime.

And a woman in her 20s - who now has cerebral palsy, cognitive difficulties and learning problems following open-heart surgery in 1990 - is in line for a "substantial" payout as well.

Similarly, £60,000 was awarded to a 74-year-old after a claim of clinical negligence was made against Basildon Hospital following an operation, the Echo recently reported.ADNFCR-2353-ID-800211281-ADNFCR
