NLA calls for end to letting agent renewal fees

There should be an end to the renewal fees charged by letting agents, it has been claimed.

According to the National Landlords Association (NLA), such charges can be unfair.

It made its comments after the Office of Fair Trading secured a court order against a high street letting agent whose commission charges were deemed to be "severely camouflaged".

David Salusbury, chairman of the NLA - which is headquartered in London and represents around 18,000 fee-paying members throughout the UK - said the development is "good news" for consumers.

He went on to pose the question: "Where the letting agent performs no service to the landlord throughout a tenancy, why should they still be able to charge the landlord if their tenant chooses to renew the tenancy?"

Mr Salusbury warned letting agents off misleading their clients, adding that landlords should guard against this by checking the small print of contracts.
