The number of consumers planning to purchase cars has increased, new figures suggest.

Produced by AA Financial Services, the statistics indicate that 20 per cent of people it polled intend to change their vehicle over the coming year.

This is a rise on the 18 per cent recorded at the same time last year, the organisation claimed.

Also, 21 per cent revealed their next car will be brand new, regardless of when they buy it, which is a rise of three per cent on last year.

Mark Huggins, director of AA Financial Services - which provides a range of services, including credit cards, loans and savings products - said the car scrappage scheme implemented by the government is helping.

However, he added that if it not extended, new car sales could slow down.

He went on to state: "In fact, the Car Purchase Index found that over a quarter of those with a car aged ten years or more could take advantage of the scheme."
