Older consumers 'should have more help getting insurance'
Older consumers should have access to greater assistance when they are seeking insurance products, it has been claimed.
According to the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba), which represents the interest of brokers, intermediaries and consumers, the government should intervene over the issue.
It made its plea following the close of the Equalities Office's consultation on ending age discrimination.
Biba suggested that a tailored exemption should be made allowing for age to be used in insurance ratings provided it is proportionate to risks and costs.
Its technical and corporate affairs executive Graeme Trudgill commented: "We believe that a problem in obtaining insurance occurs because consumers do not know where they can obtain appropriate cover."
According to the expert, it is "not reasonable" to expect people to have to search extensively in order to find cover.
The government should therefore support a system of signposting older people to suitable insurance that meets their needs, he added.
