Older people 'increasingly likely to seek divorce'
Posted by Emily Jones
Unlike their counterparts in other age groups, older couples are increasingly likely to seek divorces.
This is according to an article in the Times, which suggested that such people are bucking the current trend of a reduction in the number of spouses who opt to separate.
The article highlighted information provided by the Office for National Statistics, which showed that the divorce rate among Britons is "dropping sharply" in each age group apart from those over 60.
Responding to the findings, Stephanie Coontz, the author of Marriage, a History, suggested one possible factor is that the older generation tended to marry early.
In addition, rising life expectancies mean that more people may want to avoid being in unhappy relationships in the decades they see stretching out in front of them after their children have left home.
Clydesdale and Yorkshire Banks recently released research which suggested that the recession may have heightened the risk of divorces, with one million families reporting that financial difficulties have caused them to argue more.
