One-third of cyclists have had bike stolen, report shows

Ylr-news-800040533

Those looking to obtain insurance cover might be interested to learn that one-third of cyclists in the UK have had at least one bike stolen in the last five years.

Aviva carried out its Cycle Security poll, which gauged the opinions of 2,000 riders in a bid to determine the theft hotspots in the country.

It found that eight per cent of respondents have had as many as three or more bicycles taken in the last five years, with locations outside offices and train stations reckoned to be among the most common crime sites.

The insurer undertook a covert investigation and timed the length of time it took thieves to pinch bikes that had been planted with poor security lock arrangements.

It revealed that three of the five cycles were stolen within five hours, including one outside a shop in West London, which was gone within 20 minutes.

Citizens who live in remote regions might also be interested to learn that crime in rural areas has increased lately, if 70 per cent of NFU Mutual's agents are to be believed.
