Outlook for employment sector 'remains uncertain'

The annual outlook for the UK's employment sector remains unsure despite recent data showing that more people have found work recently, an expert has insisted.

According to the latest figures published by the Office for National Statistics, the employment rate for people between the ages of 16 and 64 increased by 0.2 per cent in the three-month period ending in February 2011 when compared to numbers recorded for the previous quarter.

However, although it cannot be disputed that this represents good news for the wider economy, Dr John Philpott, chief economic adviser at the Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development (CIPD), said the jobs outlook for the rest of the year is still uncertain.

Dr Philpott explained that while these figures "are apparently signalling green for go … they don't tell us anything much about the road ahead".

Indeed, he added that Jobseeker's Allowance statistics suggest that "unemployment will start to rise again" in the coming months.
