Parents 'more aware' of importance of wills
Parents of children under the age of 18 are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of having a will and many are choosing to update their legal documents before setting off on a family holiday this summer.
This Is Money noted that the high-profile custody battle for the late Michael Jackson's children, as well as the recent Air France disaster and ongoing fears about swine flu, could be some of the drivers for parents to make or update their wills.
Mums or dads with children should discuss who to appoint as a legal guardian of their offspring should they die before the child turns 18, the finance site suggested.
It added that they should also discuss their plans with the person they would wish to appoint as the guardian and make sure this individual is willing to accept this responsibility.
Some parents may also choose to draft a letter of wishes to direct to the guardian how the children should be cared for in the event of their death. While this letter is not a legally-binding document, it can help provide the appointed guardian with clarification about specifics such as the child's education or religious upbringing.
The Independent recently noted that age should not be a factor when it comes to making a will. It advised those who are unsure about where to start to contact a solicitor, who can make sure all documents are in place and legal.
