Paternity leave development 'is good news'
Posted by Emily Jones
Changes set to be implemented concerning parental leave have been welcomed by the policy officer at Families Need Fathers.
According to Becky Jarvis, they reflect changes that have occurred in childcare roles in the UK over recent times.
Under the government's plans, new fathers will be able to take up to six months of leave from work while the baby's mother returns to employment.
The alterations, which are based on a consultation concerning the subject held at the end of last year, will apply to parents of children due on or after April 3rd 2011.
This is so that businesses have time to adjust to the new legislation before it is enforced.
Commenting on the issue, Ms Jarvis stated: "We're pleased that traditional gender roles of mothers as carers and fathers as breadwinners are no longer being reinforced with maternity and paternity leave."
However, she added that there is still progress to be made in terms of the employment rights of parents.
