Pay freezes 'unfair on workers'

Ylr-news-19274725

The pay freezes being implemented currently by some firms are unfair on workers, it has been suggested.

According to Carolyn Jones, director of the Institute of Employment Rights (IER), businesses are "taking advantage" of employees.

She made her comments in the wake of new IER figures which suggest that two-thirds of manufacturers are freezing pay, while 16 per cent of such firms had deferred their pay settlements.

Ms Jones said: "It's outrageous that people are getting asked to sacrifice something whereas shareholders and directors never seem to make that same level of commitment or sacrifice."

She added that it is "outrageous" that firms fail to take into account the impact that pay freezes and cuts have on struggling families.

The expert concluded by suggesting that workers are being asked to pay for a crisis that was not of their making.

An independent organisation, the IER acts as a focal point for the spread of ideas in the field of labour law.
