Peer pushes for civil partnerships to be allowed in churches

A peer has tabled an amendment to the Equality Bill which would enable people getting civil partnerships to do so in church.
Lord Waheed Alli wants the prohibition on such ceremonies occurring in religious buildings to be removed, PinkNews.co.uk reports.
Responding to the call, Ben Summerskill, chief executive of Stonewall - which was established in 1989 by a group of people who had been active in opposing Section 28 of the Local Government Act - said it was welcome.
Section 28 was designed to prevent the so-called 'promotion' of homosexuality in educational institutions across the UK.
Mr Summerskill remarked: "We know that there are many lesbian and gay people of faith who want to celebrate their civil partnerships in religious premises."
Given that there are religions that wish to permit this, such as Quakers, there is "absolutely no reason" why politicians should not support the proposal, he went on to say.
