Popularity of prenups 'to rise' (category: family - divorce)

Ylr-news-19412925

The number of couples signing prenuptial agreements will rise over the course of the next five years, legal experts have predicted.

In a recent poll of solicitors conducted by Unbiased.co.uk, 66 per cent of the respondents said such an increase is likely to occur.

Furthermore, one in ten reported a belief that the rise will be significant.

Responding to the findings, Unbiased.co.uk chief executive Karen Barrett said: "With current divorce rates and highly publicised divorce cases making front page news it is not surprising that more people are looking to protect their assets ahead of getting married."

She added that while such agreements are not yet legally binding, they may be in five years' time.

The survey also found that 82 per cent of solicitors questioned believed a prenuptial agreement can be an effective way for people to protect their assets in a divorce proceeding.

Recently, the Times reported that justice minister Bridget Prentice and fellow politician Lord Bach were discussing ways in which the take-up of mediation between divorcing couples could be increased.
