Potholes 'cost Cardiff £1.3m' in compensation claims
Consumers in Cardiff may like to watch their step as a Freedom of Information request from the city's branch of the Taxpayers' Alliance has revealed that, in the last four years, almost £1.3 million has been paid out as a result of potholed pavements.
During this period, a total of 1,038 compensation claims against the council were heard, with 199 settled, the South Wales Echo reports.
Currently, approximately £1.1 million is spent maintaining public walkways, which accounts for around 13 per cent of the highways budget.
A spokeswoman for the local authority - which monitors more than 1,000 km of footpaths and roads in the county, as well as 29 km of trunk roads and motorway on behalf of the National Assembly - noted that, in recent times, there has been a drop in the number of claims made against the council.
"All streets in the city are subject to a planned inspection on a regular basis and any notified complaints are also inspected," she remarked.
