PPI point of sale ban should remain, consumer group says

Ylr-news-19349278

The point of sale ban on payment protection insurance (PPI) introduced by the Competition Commission (CC) should remain in place, it has been suggested.

According to consumer group Which?, the form of cover has been "widely discredited".

The organisation suggested that it is important that PPI is sold separately from other financial products in order to ensure that consumers have the chance to make informed choices.

It made its comments as Barclays started its appeal against the CC's move.

Today (September 7th), the bank begun its competition appeals tribunal hearing contesting the ban.

Which? chief executive Peter Vicary-Smith commented: "Rather than appealing the CC's decision, Barclays should concentrate its efforts on developing protection products that offer better cover and value for money to its customers."

An independent public body, the CC exists to help make sure that healthy competition exists between companies in Britain.

It performs a number of roles, including examining the legality of mergers between large firms.
