Priest speaks out against comments made over civil partnerships

Ylr-news-19327465

A priest has registered his concern over comments made by the archbishop of Canterbury concerning civil partnerships.

Recently, Dr Rowan Williams stated: "A person living in such a union cannot without serious incongruity have a representative function in a church whose public teaching is at odds with their lifestyle."

Mr Williams - who was born in 1950 and assumed his role as the 104th bishop of the Canterbury on December 2nd 2002 - made his remarks in response to a move by US Anglicans to ordain gay clergy.

In an open letter, Romford priest Father John-Francis Friendship - who is himself in a civil partnership - said the archbishop's words had done "immense harm" to the church, PinkNews.co.uk reports.

He told the news source that he could not see any reasons why gay people would want to join the church currently in the context of the attitudes expressed by certain senior officials.
