Prime minister makes pledge over civil partnerships
Posted by Emily Jones
The new prime minister has made a pledge to allow civil partnerships to be carried out in places of worship if possible.
During an event held in Downing Street, to which members of the gay community were invited, David Cameron - who took up his role following the closely fought general election last month - said his government is committed to tackling discrimination against gay people.
Standing next to his Liberal Democrat deputy Nick Clegg, he said: "We shouldn't have this legalistic nonsense getting in the way of people who want to celebrate their civil partnership in churches."
However, Mr Cameron added that organisations which do not want to perform such ceremonies also have rights.
The politician went on to claim that problems such as homophobic bullying in the workplace and at school will not be solved by laws but rather require a change to take place in the culture of Britain.
