Proportion of children with married parents 'falling'

Ylr-news-19501997

The proportion of dependent children who live with married parents is declining in the UK, new figures indicate.

Produced by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), they show that less than two-thirds of such youngsters fell into this category during the period between April and June this year.

This is a fall from 12 years earlier, when 72 per cent of dependent offspring resided with a mother and father who were married.

The ONS also revealed that the average age for women to tie the knot in England and Wales presently stands at 29.8 years, while the proportion of births to women aged 35 and above was one in five.

In other family news, a spokesman for the Conservatives recently told PinkNews.co.uk that if the party came to power following next year's general election, its leader David Cameron would treat civil partnerships in the same way as he would marriage.
