Proposed alterations to the equality bill concerning civil partnerships have received support from a number of politicians.

People from both Labour and the Conservative Party have spoken in favour of the changes, which would enable same sex couples to engage in such unions in religious venues.

The planned amendments have been tabled in the House of Lords by Lord Alli.

According to a report on PinkNews.co.uk, one of those in favour of the proposals is Matt Sephton, the Conservative candidate for Salford and Eccles.

He said that, while there are "many problems" with the drafting of the bill, this area is one that should be backed, claiming it is a "completely logical step".

Mr Sephton added: "Lord Alli's amendment which allows civil partnerships to take place in religious buildings is a sentiment that I wholeheartedly support."

Civil partnerships provide gay couples with equal treatment to married heterosexual couples in respect to a number of things, including inheritance tax and employment benefits.
