Proposed laws to help tenants 'need to be rethought'

Ylr-news-19251887

Plans to increase protection for tenants whose landlords are at risk of repossession need to be rethought, it has been claimed.

Commenting on the government's consumer white paper on the issue, which recommends that tenants receive up to seven weeks notice of the date of a repossession hearing, the Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA) said changes need to be made.

According to the organisation, the protection comes in at the wrong time of the repossession process, as the proposals assume that a repossession order will be granted.

ARLA president Lucy Morton said: "If the repossession order is not granted and tenants agree a new contract with another landlord, they will have broken the law by reneging on a legally binding contract."

The government's plans need to expressed in a clearer fashion, she added.

Formed in 1981, ARLA is a professional and regulatory body for letting agents in the UK.
