Giving up smoking can result in consumers making considerable savings on insurance policies, it has been noted.

According to research conducted by moneysupermarket.com, Britons who stopped the habit could save on average £6,044 on combined critical illness cover and up to £1,685 on a single life insurance over the lengths of the policies.

Commenting on the issue, Emma Walker, head of protection at moneysupermarket.com, said: "It is crucial smokers seriously consider both the medical and financial benefits of quitting, instead of letting their hard-earned cash go up in smoke."

She pointed out that, in order to be classed as a non-smoker and qualify for insurance discounts, consumers must have kicked the habit for a full year.

With considerable savings to be made, hopefully more people will find the willpower needed to permanently stop smoking, she went on to state.

Smoking is associated with a range of medical problems, including increased risk of strokes and various cancers.
