REC: Race discrimination needs to be tackled
Posted by Mark Cunningham
More needs to be done to prevent race discrimination among private firms in the UK, it has been claimed.
According to general secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Brendan Barber, employees are still subject to unfair treatment based on their racial background.
His comments were made after communities secretary John Denham released a statement concerning the issue in which he conceded that that there is still "much to do".
The politician suggested that the way in which race interacts with other issues, such as religion and class, has made dealing with unfair treatment more complicated in recent times.
Mr Barber agreed with the minister and went on to point out that particular attention should be paid to private companies.
He commented: "In the private sector, employers are not required to promote race equality, just to avoid discrimination, which relies on individuals pursuing complaints against employers before anything is done."
