Recession 'causing increase in disability discrimination'

Disabled workers in the UK are subject to greater levels of discrimination as a result of the ongoing economic problems precipitated by the credit crunch, it has been suggested.

A new study published by Leonard Cheshire Disability found that one in 20 such people lost their jobs last year.

Entitled Disability and the Downturn, the research found that bosses are targeting workers who suffer from disabilities for redundancy.

In addition, the charity - which claims to support more than 21,000 disabled people in the UK and has operations in 52 countries - said firms are unfairly turning down such people for jobs.

It added: "Not only are disabled people more likely to be out of work and experience a higher incidence of in-work poverty, they face additional financial costs arising as a result of an impairment."

According to the organisation, the findings are "worrying" as unemployment has a disproportionately penalising effect on disabled individuals.
