Mothers in the financial sector have suffered disproportionately from the recession, according to a professional.

City Women's Network president India Gary-Martin explained that women with children have a harder time adhering to the rigidity and longer hours that firms may demand during hard economic times.

"This is as prevalent in rates of attrition as it is in rates of redundancy," she said.

She also noted that during recessions, companies take their focus off backing women into top spots and concentrate on other concerns.

Ms Gary-Martin added that women now comprise a smaller percentage of FTSE 100 banks' boards than they did in 2004, with the figure then still being only 13 per cent.

She accepted that recessions create difficulty for everyone, but maintained that female financial service workers have been faced with extra challenges.

An online poll by Citrix recently found that 70 per cent of employees think that mobile working is an important part of improving productivity.
