Relying on credit cards to pay bills 'can lead to problems'
Posted by Mark Cunningham
Consumers have been advised to avoid the temptation to cover expenses such as bills on their credit cards.
According to moneysupermarket.com, nearly five million Britons rely on plastic in this way.
Also, the organisation found that half this number (2.5 million) withdraw cash on their cards, which means they are charged a collective sum of up to £90 million per year.
Responding to the statistics, Kevin Mountford, head of banking at moneysupermarket.com, said: "Used responsibly, credit cards can be an integral part of household budgeting but it's alarming to see so many people using their cards to pay for what should be everyday spending."
The expert went on to say that individuals who are using credit to fund such purchases should review their finances as this may be the first sign of financial difficulty.
Recently, the Financial Services Authority suggested there was a rise in number of complaints made by consumers concerning bank charges during the second half of last year, with over 2.6 million recorded.
