Reports of neighbourhood disturbance 'on the rise'

Ylr-news-19386257

Reports of disputes between neighbours have increased, new figures suggest.

Produced by Halifax Home Insurance, the statistics indicate that such reports have gone up by a third in two years, with 17 per cent of homeowners experiencing serious problems with those living near them this year.

This level is a high not seen since 1997, the firm claims.

Among the most common issues causing arguments between neighbours were excessive noise - which accounted for 49 per cent of complaints - and rude or intimidating behaviour at 23 per cent.

The rise in the number of people renting property caused by the recession was identified by Halifax Home Insurance as a factor contributing to the climb in disputes.

Senior claims manager at the firm Martyn Foulds said: "It's clear that neighbour nuisance is a real and growing problem that affects thousands of Britons. If the problem gets out of control, homeowners can resort to legal action."

Last month, esure pet insurance suggested that 4.3 million UK households find the animals owned by nearby residents to be a nuisance.
