More than half of all Britons are putting their family's inheritance at risk by not having a will in place, new research has revealed.

According to a study conducted by Standard Life, some 51 per cent of all adults in the UK have not written a last testament, meaning their loved ones may not receive what they are entitled to should the worst happen.

The survey found the lack of a will to be a widespread issue among all age groups, with 22 per cent of those over the age of 65 not having written such a document and 32 per cent of people between the ages of 55 and 64 also failing to do so.

Meanwhile, 60 per cent of 30 to 44-year-olds do not have a will in place, with Julie Hutchison, head of estate planning at the financier, noting "there is real inertia" within the British population.

This comes after the Law Society called on the government to enhance the country's regulatory system for will writers.
