Research: People embracing volunteering
Posted by Chris Stevenson
People of all ages scouring the job market for opportunities are beginning to embrace the benefits of volunteering, new research has found.
A study commissioned by insurance company Zurich established that more than half of the 2,025 adults questioned had partaken in at least one voluntary activity last year, with individuals recognising the fact this could help them in their quest to find employment.
Paul Emery, head of community and social organisation at the company, explained that working without pay has become more widely accepted in the aftermath of the global economic downturn.
He explained volunteering as a "dual benefit" and is now "much more a part of what we expect in society and also what we drive for in our careers".
Mr Emery went on to say that while there is no guarantee that undertaking such work will impress employers, volunteering is generally perceived as positive by senior managers.
