Tenants renting properties across the UK are likely to be pleased to hear that new research has shown that the average cost of rents in the country fell in December 2010.

According to the latest Buy-to-Let Index from LSL Property Services published today (January 21st 2011), charges made by landlords to their tenants fell by 1.2 per cent last month to an average of £684 per month.

This figure represents the first reduction in the sector since January 2010 and the lowest average since July of the same year, but remains some 3.8 per cent higher than the statistic posted in the corresponding month in 2009.

People renting in London were among those to benefit most from this trend, as fees on properties in the capital dropped by 2.3 per cent over the duration of the month.

This comes after David Lawrenson of LettingFocus.com said recently that demand for rental houses will continue to grow in 2011.
