RLA: Tenants should be empowered with right to choose over Housing Benefit

Tenants in rented accommodation should be given the autonomy to decide themselves who the Housing Benefits they receive are paid to.

That is the view of the Residential Landlords Association (RLA), which yesterday urged MPs looking into to government's Welfare Reform Bill to vote in order to "empower" these individuals with this responsibility.

According to the RLA, there is evidence to suggest that many tenants are struggling to keep up with their necessary outgoings and therefore would "prefer the security of knowing their rent has been paid".

Alan Ward, chairman of the RLA, commented that this should be "enshrined in legislation" without forcing landlords to lower the rent they are charging in order to receive some form of income from struggling tenants.

Mr Ward added that such a new system would result in "greater freedoms for tenants to choose what best meets their individual needs".

Meanwhile, Chris Horne of Property Hawk said recently that some landlords may opt to increase their charges in 2011.
